Who Is Mister Bingle?
For decades, Mister Bingle has been an iconic New Orleans holiday tradition. This year, the icon celebrates his 70th birthday.
New Orleans City Park plans to throw the beloved holiday character a party to commemorate his birthday in style. Guests can celebrate Mister Bingle’s 70th Birthday Party on Dec. 1 through Dec. 3 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at City Putt.
Each person will get to play one course, enjoy one cocktail or soft drink, taste sweet treats, get a free raffle ticket and receive giveaways. Admission to the party is $10 per person.
The beloved holiday character makes an appearance each year at Celebration in the Oaks. Fans of Mister Bingle can visit him near the back of the Botanical Gardens next to the new “Naughty or Nice” exhibit.
Before coming to New Orleans City Park in 2005, Mister Bingle was widely known as the holiday mascot for the historic department store Maison Blanche. The character, born in 1948, has a snowman body, an ice cream cone hat, red mittens, a candy cane in hand and holly wings.
Amanda Frentz, assistant director of public relations at New Orleans City Park, says it is important to keep the tradition of Mister Bingle alive and pass the history along to younger generations.
Frentz says the desire to connect with a younger audience was also a factor in the decision to put the icon on social media.
“The decision to put Mister Bingle on social media was easy; he’s the spokesperson for Celebration in the Oaks,” Frentz said. “He loves for people to know how many marshmallows he ate that day,” she said.
“He also loves selfies, so make sure to stop by and give good wishes,” Frentz said.
