Watch a Newborn Elk Take its First Steps
That’s what we’re saying about a newborn elk calf born at Peck Ranch near Van Buren, Missouri.
Just three hours after being born, the calf was working to stand up.
Even better: it was all caught on camera thanks to the Missouri Department of Conservaiton.
The department says the baby girl was born around 9:30 a.m. on June 1.
And you can see her yourself.
Peck Ranch is home to wild Missouri elk as a part of a large restoration zone between Ellington and Winona.
You can take a driving tour for a chance to see the herd.
At Peck Ranch there is a 10 mile drivable route through the refuge portion of the area where you can go on a self guided elk viewing tour.
The route will open to the public after July 1.
Your best chances of seeing elk are the hours right after sunrise or right before sunset.
In the meantime, you can camp, hike along the Ozark Trail or shoot at the range.
