Thoughts on Life and Art from ‘The Chicken Man’

If you've been to Columbia, chances are you've passed by the Chicken Man.

Most days, you will find him on the corner of Gervais and Oak Streets in Columbia, S.C. doing what he loves.

Originally from Edgefield, S.C., the “Chicken Man” Ernest Lee has become the face of folk art in Columbia.

Lee tells us he paints because it is his calling to make people happy.

“Anytime you can put something on the canvas board and make somebody smile¬†you have done your job; you have answered your calling.”

Find the Chicken Man downtown and pick up one of his famous chicken paintings for yourself. Or if you ask nicely, he might just paint anything you like.
