But WHO is the Lizard Man? Or WHAT is the Lizard Man?
In 1988, Christopher Davis stopped to change a tire. But a flat would be the least of his worries. Davis said without warning, a 7-foot-tall “lizard man” came charging out of the swamp and took a bite out of his car.
But was the then 17-year-old making things up? Clint visits Bishopville to talk to those who think they know but absolutely believe in the Lizard Man.
The story has been a South Carolina phenomenon since 1988 and its local pop culture relevance, such as being the focus of state lotto commercials, is real in the people who tell its legend.
The total solar eclipse in 2017 had folks fearful that it might bring it out. Even South Carolina native, comedian and late night host Stephen Colbert brought it to the masses – recently. Lizard Man even has an active Twitter account, y’all.
At once, there was even a $1 million reward for his capture.
There is even an annual festival to all things Lizard Man and the ghostly footprints he’s left behind.
But to KNOW the story is to hear it from a Midlands native himself. Clint was told as a child that if he was bad, the Lizard Man was going to get him.
