Is This the Best Pizza in the South?

Pizza Delicious started as a pop-up, so perhaps it’s appropriate that this beloved pizza restaurant in New Orleans’ Bywater is now “popping up” on the national radar.

This hot spot’s humble beginnings actually helped shape the restaurant’s philosophy on its food in general.  Their limited space meant limited space for ingredients, which in turn dictated that freshness was of paramount importance.  That has carried over into everything that they do.

As co-owner Michael Friedman explains:

“Pizza Delicious is really all about making as much as we can here, in-house.  We make our own dough, we make our own sauce … anything that we can possibly make — that’s feasible — to put on a pizza, we’ll do it ourselves.”

Born out of that as well, the restaurant features daily specials that they rotate to keep people coming back for different pies at different times.  Again, from necessity came an identity.

In addition to pizza, visitors also have the option of ordering sides such as garlic knots, pepperoni rolls or cauliflower rolls, several rotating house-made pasta dishes (e.g. Linguine and Clams, Bucatini Carbonara, Mushroom Bolognese), salads (Caesar, House, and a daily special) and even dessert in the form of cookies.

Is this the best pizza in the South?  The critics and foodies have weighed in with several glowing reviews, and it’s hard to argue with the freshness and quality that Pizza Delicious emphasizes, but ultimately, we’ll simply put the question out there and let our audience decide.

A bit of New York in New Orleans … thanks to Pizza Delicious, that’s no longer a pipe dream.

Pizza Delicious, 617 Piety Street, opens Tuesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
