It’s summertime! The sun is out, it’s warm, and practically every day is a great day to be outside. but there are a few things you should remember. According to the CDC, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. In 2015, over 80,000 new cases of Melanomas of the skin were reported, and almost 9,000 people died from it in the US. Most of that damage happens when your skin burns. But, the CDC does have some suggestions to prevent them from happening.
1. Stay in the shade
The sun’s UV rays are the strongest at midday. So if you’re relaxing outside, use a tree, umbrella or tent to keep out of the sun.
2. Use sunscreen
Put it on before you walk out the door every time. Make sure you’re putting it on your children and teaching them the importance of it as well. Broad spectrum is the best to use.
3. Wear long shirts and pants
Bear with us. Clothes made from tightly woven fabric give you the best protection.
4. Grab a hat
Hats are great because they protect the face, scalp, ears and neck all at once! They come in a lot of varieties, so you’re sure to find a style you like wearing.
5. Don't forget about your eyes
Yup, the sun’s UV rays can damage your eyes too. So when you’re buying sunglasses, make sure they’re offering you some kind of UV protection.
